Sri Lanka together with Jordan, Kazakhstan and Thailand are in the same group at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup Division ‘B’ Basketball tournament which will commence from August 13-19 in Bangkok. This tournament was known as the Asian Basketball Confederation for women’s National teams from Asia and Oceania regions in 2021 and the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship until 2015 said Sri Lanka Basketball Federation Secretary Chandana Liyanage who is the Assistant Secretary of National Olympic Committee (NOC). This tournament is held every two years by FIBA.
Women’s Asia Cup was conducted in two divisions while this year the top teams of Division ‘B’ vie for promotion to Division ‘A’. The teams in Division ‘A’ have to avoid relegation as well. The Division B winner will replace Chinese Taipei who finished 8th in Sydney following the defeat to Lebanon. 8 countries are competing in the tournament while Sri Lanka are in Group B with Kazakhstan, Jordan and Thailand. Group A features Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Mongolia.
Sri Lanka women’s team led by Anjali Ekanayake qualified for the FIBA Asia Women’s Cup 2023 by defeating Maldives in the SABA Women’s Championship in 2022. Anjali Ekanayake will leave for Bangkok today to participate in this tournament.
