It was an unlucky moment for Afghanistan as Sri Lanka won the match by just 2 runs and qualified for the Super Four round in the Asia Cup 2023. Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. For the first wicket, Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka made 63 runs before Gulbadin Naib removed Dimuth for 32 (35). After that, Kusal Mendis displayed a brilliant batting performance for Sri Lanka by scoring 92 runs before falling to Rashid Khan. Sri Lanka lost their middle-order wickets unexpectedly. However, Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana took Sri Lanka away from danger by posting Sri Lanka’s innings at 291/8. Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan took 4 and 2 wickets respectively for Afghanistan.
Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost their opening 3 wickets cheaply, scoring only 50 runs. After that, Afghanistan’s skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi scored 59 and 65 runs respectively. Kasun Rajitha was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking 4 wickets for 79 runs. After that, Rashid Khan came and gave some delivers but Sri Lanka did not give up on the match and fought to qualify for the Super Four. The 37th over was particularly exciting! Afghanistan needed 3 runs to win the game, with only two wickets remaining. Dhananjaya de Silva’s superb spells took 2 wickets and restricted the opponent to 289 runs in 37.4 overs. Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh on September 9th in Colombo.
