Chess players Ovin and Desandhi do Sri Lanka proud in Dubai

Sri Lanka’s Ovin Gamage and Desandhi Gamage, secured top positions in the Below 1700 Rating Category at the UAE 2023 Asian Amateur Chess Championships. Desandhi won the gold in Below 1700 Rating Category and was placed overall second. This tournament, organized by the UAE Chess Federation on behalf of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation, worked off in the Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from August 27 to September 4, and saw the participation of numerous National Federations from across Asia.

Desandhi Gamage, representing Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, exhibited exceptional strategic acumen, amassing an impressive score of 7/9 points. Her chess rating stood at 1495, cementing her first-place finish in the Below 1700 Rating Category.

Meanwhile, Ovin Gamage showcased his chess prowess by claiming the first runner-up position in the same category. With a commendable rating of 1587, he secured 6/9 points in the Open Category, further affirming his place among the chess elite.

The tournament, spanning seven intense days, witnessed the participation of approximately 120 players representing nearly 40 countries from across Asia. In the Men’s Category, Indian players demonstrated their dominance by securing the first two positions, showcasing their strategic brilliance.

Players from Kazakhstan clinched the third and fourth positions, adding to the tournament’s international flavour.

The UAE also celebrated victories on home turf, with Rouda Essa Alserkal emerging as the champion in the Girls’ Category. UAE’s Al Maamari Wafia Darwish showcased exceptional skill to secure the third position, further highlighting the growing prowess of local chess talents.
