Today’s events
Under athletics, Lakshini Sarangi Silva will participate in the women’s long jump event at 4.40 pm local time today, and the 400m mixed relay event will be held at 6.10 pm. Aruna Darshana, Kalinga Kumarage, Rajitha Rajakaruna, Nadeesha Ramanayake, Tarushi Karunaratne and Gayanthika Abeyratne will join the fray.
Gayanthika Abeyratne, who tool part in the women’s 1500m event, had to give up her medal hopes event at the Asian Games yesterday due to finishing fourth.
However, Gayanthika, who clocked 4:18.77 minutes yesterday, also achieved the best time recorded by a Sri Lankan athlete in the history of the Asian Games.
Keshani Samarakoon had previously achieved the top spot in the event by finishing 6th in 1998 at the Asian Games in Bangkok with a time of 4:35.00 minutes.
Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile won the gold medal in this event where 17 female athletes joined with a time of 4:11.65 minutes. India’s Harmilan Bains (4:12.74m) won the silver medal, while Bahrain’s Marta Yota (4:15.97m) won the bronze medal.
Yesterday, Rumeshika Ratnayake, who participated in the second race of the women’s 200m preliminary round, finished the race in 24.51 seconds. With that, she was placed third and 11th out of 24 players overall.
In this event, the best 8 players entered the finals, and it was notable that Kristina Marie from the Philippines, who was ranked 10th among the total 24 players yesterday, entered the finals. The opportunity came as she finished second (24.02 seconds) ahead of Rumeshika in the second heat of the preliminary round, losing to two players ahead of her overall. Sri Lanka’s Damayanthi Darsha holds the record of this event since 1998.
Meanwhile, Nadeesha Ramanayake, Aruna Darshana and Kalinga Kumarage, who participated in the finals of the 400m event last Saturday (30), did not get a chance to win medals.
Squash
In the men’s singles round of 32, Ravindu Laksiri registered a comfortable 3-0 win over Thailand’s Ravipun Limphaiboon. Ravindu won the first round of the match with 11-1 points, the second round with 11-2 points and the third round with 11-4 points. With this, Ravindu qualified for the round of 16, and the match is scheduled to be held today.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan team lost 2-0 to Malaysia in the ‘B’ group of the squash mixed doubles event. In the 19-minute match, the Malaysian team won the first round 11-4 and won the second round 11-7. Shameel Vakil and Chanitma Sinale represented the Sri Lankan team. These two are going to compete against the Philippines today.
Weight Lifting
Yesterday, Dilanka Isuru Kumara, representing Sri Lanka in the weightlifting tournament, entered the field of competition in the ‘B’ category of 61 kg weight class, and among 5 players, he got the 4th place. Dilanka lifted 106 kg in Snatch and 135 kg in Clean & Jerk for a total of 241 kg.
Archery
Sajeev de Silva, who participated in the Recurve Men’s Individual Qualification Round competition yesterday, scored 614 points and was ranked 69th among all the players who participated in this event. Meanwhile, Anuradha Karunaratne, who joined the Compound Women’s Individual Qualification Round, had to finish the competition at the last place among 51 female players. She scored 623 points.
Sanjeeva Wasantha Kumara joined the Compound Men’s Individual Qualification Round yesterday, and after scoring 664 points, he was ranked 53rd among 64 players. Sanjeev will take on Jamiyangombo Purevdorj of Mongolia, Anuradha will take on Jumana Joumana Ali Alnajjar of United Arab Emirates in the Round of 32 today at the Compound, while Sajeev will join Dauletkeldi Zhangbyrbay of Kazakhstan in the Round of 32.
Golf
Nadaraja Thangaraja, who competed in the fourth round of the men’s singles tournament yesterday, which was the last day of the golf event, finished his event as the 34th. At the end of the third round last Saturday (30), he was in 37th place with 216 points, and yesterday his number of points increased to 288, which improved by 3 places. With this, the golf matches ended, losing Sri Lanka’s medal hopes from the event.
Cricket
Nepal and Hong Kong teams won yesterday’s matches in the men’s preliminary round of the Asian Games cricket event. Nepal won by 138 runs against Maldives, while Japan lost by 5 wickets to Hong Kong. Under this event, the preliminary round will be completed after the match between Malaysia and Thailand today.
