Junior Rowers Shine In Malaysian Waters

The Sri Lankan Junior Rowers from Junior Girls’ National Rowing Pool, Gateway College Colombo, Diyawannawa Rowing Academy, Wesley College Colombo & British School Colombo excelled at Varsity Boat Race Junior Rowing Championship – 2023 in Malaysia.

This was organized by the Ministry of Higher Education through Majlis Sukan University – Malaysia from 3rd to 8th October at the Water Sports Complex. More than 12 Junior teams participated including teams from Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Havishka Perera, a Sri Lanka Junior Rowing pool Athlete from British School Colombo, won Gold in the Junior Women Double Scull (JW2X ) and Silver in in Junior Women Single Scull (JW1X). Jaanya Hasara Kumarawadu, a Sri Lanka Junior Rowing pool Athlete from Gateway College Colombo, won Gold in Junior Women Single Scull (JW1X).

Representing Diyawannawa Rowing Academy, Tashiya Perera won the Gold in the Junior Women Double Scull (JW2X) with Havishka. Sanuthmee Perera and the pair of Navithmee Perera & Menoli Yatigammana were placed 4th in Junior Women single Scull (JW1X) and Junior Women Double Scull (JW2X ) respectively.

The Junior Boys also performed well as Ganindu Kirinde & Reshil Peiris from Gateway College won Gold in the Junior Men Double Scull (JM2X ) while Kester Weerasinghe & Sanija Ganewatte from Diyawannawa Rowing Academy finished in second place for Silver and Dimithri Nalliah & Oshadha Haputhanne from Wesley College Colombo also finished on the Podium for the Bronze.

In the Junior Men Single Scull (JM1X) event, Darion Spittel From Wesley College Colombo won Silver and Nathan Gregory from Gateway College won Bronze while M. Sulayman Shazleen Saleem from Diyawannawa Rowing Academy finished in 4th place.

The victorious Varsity Boat Race teams coached by Nirmal Gunarathna arrived in Sri Lanka the day before, as the junior rowers gained valuable experience at an international event in Asia.
