Sri Lankans achieved a historic victory as they beat the defending champions, England, by 8 wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Earlier, the ENG skipper won the toss and elected to bat first. However, that decision worked against ENG as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Ben Stokes was the highest scorer, adding 43 runs to the ENG innings. SL bowlers delivered impactful spells, limiting ENG to 156 runs in 33.2 overs.
Chasing the easy target, Sri Lanka lost only two wickets and chased down the target with 146 to spare. Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama contributed 77 and 65 runs, respectively.
