Nethsala Rajapaksa from Lyceum International School Wattala and Shandheeban Thribashith of S Thomas’ Preparatory School emerged as the standout athletes at the conclusion of the Ritzbury 52nd Sir John Tarbet Athletics Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday.
Nethsala Rajapaksa, competing in the Under-14 category, showcased exceptional talent by setting a new meet record in the Long Jump, covering an impressive distance of 5.64 meters. Her remarkable performance earned her a total of 921 points, securing her the title of Best Athlete in the championship. Not stopping there, she also bagged the gold medal in the High Jump, achieving
a 1.55-metre jump, along with a silver in the 200m race with a swift timing of 26.8 seconds.
Master In charge of Lyceum International School Wattala, Pradeep Nugegoda, expressed high hopes about Rajapaksa’s future in Sri Lankan athletics, suggesting that her performance might even be a potential world record for the year.
Thribashith, from S Thomas’ Preparatory School Colombo, made a mark in the Under-15 High Jump, securing the gold with an impressive height of 1.90 metres. His remarkable performance earned him 827 points, leading to the recognition of Ritzbury Best Athlete of the Year in the 52nd edition of the Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championships.
The championship witnessed various other notable achievements. WAK Osada of Royal College Embilipitiya set a new meet record of 11.1 seconds in the Under-15 Boys 80m Hurdles. In the Under-13 Girls 200m final, GL Swarnamali of Hewavitharana Maha Vidyalaya in Rajagiriya set a new meet record by clocking 26.60 seconds.
DS Wickramaratne from Ave Maria Convent, which claimed the Overall Girls Champion School title, set a new meet record of 12.1 seconds in the Under-13 Girls 70m final. Additionally, Kaushalya Jayawardhana set a new meet record of 58.5 seconds in the Under-15 Girls 400m final, while other impressive records were set by AGK Kaveesha of Wijayapura Junior School and Viharagala Maha Vidyalaya’s MB Uduwelaarachchi in their respective events.
The final day of the championship witnessed the breaking of eight new meet records, totaling 17 new records overall. Notably, all eight new records were achieved in various track events, showcasing the exceptional talent and determination of these young athletes.
