India’s young batting star Shubman Gill has dethroned Pakistan skipper Babar Azam to claim the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI Rankings. Despite having a quiet Cricket World Cup so far, Shubman managed to surpass Babar. Gill aggregated 830 rating points, while Babar has slipped to the No. 2 spot with 824 ratings.
Notably, Gill is the second fastest Indian to reach No.1 ODI ranking. Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni holds the record for taking the fewest innings to reach the top ranking. While Dhoni took 38 innings to claim the top spot, Gill took 41 innings to become number 1 in ODIs.
The Indian opener is only the fourth Indian batter to claim the top spot in ODI rankings.
The 24-year-old had a dream run in the ongoing calendar year. Gill has amassed 1149 runs in 26 ODIs this year at an average of 63.00. He has scored six centuries this year and joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, in the elite list of batters with five or more hundreds in a year.
However, the star Indian opener is yet to score a century in the ongoing World Cup. Gill has amassed 219 runs from six innings in the tournament so far. He missed India’s first two matches after being infected with dengue.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj has reclaimed the top spot in the ODI bowling rankings. Siraj picked the figures of 3/16 against Sri Lanka which helped the pacer to reclaim the no.1 ranking.
