Vinuka Gunawardena of Royal College and Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood College Kandy emerged under-19 champions at the Junior National Table Tennis Championship held at the Bandaragama Indoor Stadium yesterday. The tournaments attracted over 500 young paddlers from all over the country.
At boys’ under 19 final Vinuka Gunawardhane made a hard fought five setter game to beat Rehan Senanayake of Ananda College (11/8, 11/9, 05/11, 07/11, 11/13|) while Bimandee Bandara defeated Diviya Dharani of Dharmasoka College with a five setter game( 11/09, 11/07, 06/11, 08/11, 11/08).
Chanuki Akshana of Dharmasoka College and Kenura Silva of Nalanda College won girls and boys under 11 titles while Yoshini Jayawardane of Mahamaya Girls school Kandy and Naviru Nethsitha of Dharmasoka College won girls and boys under 13 finals respectively. The under 15 girls and boys finals were won by Thamadi Kavindya of Devananda College and Janith Batugedara of Royal College.
Thamadi Kavindya of Devananda College made a double with winning girls under 17 final while boys under 17 final was won by Shatiullah Akram of Trinity College.
Thamadi Kavindya and SinethmiThesanya of Devananda College won the girls doubles title while Shafiullah Akram and Bimandee Bandara emerged mixed doubles champions .
Shafiullah Akram, Trinity College and Thamadi Kavindya were named as Best Players of the tournament. President of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) Rahal Abeyratne, along with Kumudi De Silva, Secretary Sameera Wijeyagunaratne and Pathum Weerakkody, Vice Presidents were also present at the awards ceremony.
TTASL appreciated the generous support of three esteemed national champions in Sri Lanka, Rohan Sirisena, Ishara Madurangi, and Udaya Ranasinghe, for their sponsorship of cash prizes for the junior champions. This prestigious event was organized by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka, showcasing the remarkable talent and sportsmanship of young table tennis enthusiasts.
