We will do our best to promote Sri Lanka Sports and this is not a new post for me and very keen to take up this challenge said newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Council Dr. Maiya Gunasekara the veteran General Surgeon who was a National Ruggerite in 1970’s. The former Royal Ruggerite later became Rugby Union President and also held the National Sports Council Chairman post earlier and he is also a member of the National Selection Committee.
I have to meet all 15 members of the National Sports Council and want to take a collective decision to build up sports and I have no personal agenda, ” said Dr. Maiya Gunasekara. Apart from Dr. Maiya former Commonwealth Games silver medalist and Olympian Sriyani Kulawansa and former Paralympic Committee Chairman Rt. Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti retain their posts in the National Sports Council while Prof. Arjuna de Silva former Sri Lanka Cricket President Ana Punchihewa, Former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny and former Boxing Association President Rt General Jagath Jayasuriya are also included in the 15 member National Sports Council.
General Shavendra Silva remains as Chairman of the National Selection Committee. Both the National Sports Council and National Selection Committee are officially appointed by the Sports Minister according to the powers of the Sports Act (1973 No 25).

Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti, Prof Arjuna de Silva, Senior Lawyer Panduka Keerthinanda, Ana Punchihewa, Malik Cader, Dr. S.V.D Nanayakkara, Hafeez Marso, Sidath Wettimuny, Rt. General Jagath Jayasooriya, Anuradha Illeperuma, Prof. Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando (Sports Director General) and Kamal Deshapriya.
National Selection Committee: General Shavendra Silva (Chairman) Arjun Fernando (Secretary), Dr Maiya Gunasekara, Suresh Subramaniam(NOC Chairman) and Nalinda Ilangakoon.
