The Sri Lanka Under 20 team won 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at the 34th International Boxing Championship in Penang, Malaysia which concluded yesterday.
Pasindu Mihiran, a former Nalanda College boxer who is now at University of Sri Jayawardenepura, won the Gold medal in the 51kg category. The team captain was eligible to compete as he was born in January, hence still an Under 20 Boxer this year.
The Silver medals were won by Yasindu Premaratne (S.Thomas’ College, Mt.Lavinia) and Heshan Jayasinghe (St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy) for the 60kg and 63.5kg weight categories. Trinity College boxers Waruna Bandara and Salmaan Faris won Bronze medals in the 64kg and 48kg categories.
The youngest of the team of 6 was T. B. Meegalla of Royal College. Though he wasn’t fortunate to finish on the podium like his senior team mates, has gained valuable experience as a U16 boxer for his future competitions.
