Hosts Sri Lanka have named a familiar 15-woman squad for the upcoming Asia Cup T20. Chamari Athapaththu will lead the side which features plenty of names that helped Sri Lanka register their first ever series win over South Africa in any format earlier this year.
Sri Lanka have placed their faith again in Vishmi Gunaratne, the 18-year-old opener who showed maturity beyond her age during that away tour of South Africa. Kavisha Dilhari, the middle-order batter who was also among the runs on that tour, also makes it alongside 26-year-old Harshitha Samarawickrama, whose measured half-century in the third and final T20I sealed the historic series win for her side.
Wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani, left-arm bowler Udeshika Prabodhani and right-arm pacer Achini Kulasuriya, who were not part of Sri Lanka’s home T20I series against the West Indies but played in the ODI leg, find themselves in the Asia Cup squad on the back of impressive performances. Sri Lanka had lost that T20I series to the West Indies but won the ODI leg 3-0.
Sri Lanka go into the tournament as one of the favourites, having beaten both England and South Africa in T20I series away from home in the last 12 months.
