Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw played two spectacular innings to regain the LPL crown for Jaffna Kings and to claim their fourth LPL title when they outclassed Galle Marvels by 9 wickets at the LPL final played at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
The final match of the fifth edition of LPL 2024 began with Jaffna Kings’ skipper Charith Asalanka winning the toss and opting to bowl first.
Jason Behrendorff’s brilliant spell quickly took Galle Marvels’ first two wickets. Skipper Niroshan Dickwella was out for 5. After that, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Tim Seifert stabilized the Galle Marvels’ innings with a 62-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Asitha Fernando broke that strong partnership by taking Seifert’s wicket. Seifert scored 47 runs, including 2 fours and 4 sixes. Bhanuka Rajapaksa displayed a superb half-century, bringing Galle Marvels to a total of 184/6. He contributed 82 runs off 34 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes.
Chasing the target, Pathum Nissanka was out for a duck on the first ball of the Jaffna Kings’ innings. Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw then built a winning unbeaten 185 partnership for the second wicket and chase down the target 26 balls to spare. Mendis and Rossouw scored 72* and 106* respectively.
