Sri Lanka edge Cambodia in Asian Cup qualifying playoff

Sri Lanka defeated Cambodia 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the second leg of their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying playoff on Tuesday, following their 0-0 draw in the first leg on September 5.

Oliver Kelaart opened the scoring for Sri Lanka in the 37th minute, but Nhean Sosidan equalized for Cambodia early in the second half.

With no more goals in regular time, the match went into extra-time, and Sos Suhana gave Cambodia the lead in the 98th minute, but Claudio Kammerknecht equalized in the second minute of stoppage time to break Cambodian hearts and force the shootout.

With their victory, Sri Lanka advance to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers, joining 23 other teams, while Cambodia are eliminated.

In the latest FIFA rankings, Cambodia currently hold 180th position, while Sri Lanka are ranked 205th
