A shower of medals for Sri Lanka at the South Asian Junior Athletics

The Sri Lankan athletes managed to claim all the honors on the first day of the fourth South Asian (Under 20) Junior Athletics Championship which started yesterday in Chennai, India. Sri Lanka also managed to take the lead in the medal table on the first day of the 6-nation tournament by winning 9 medals.

It included 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals.

Meron Wijesinghe won the gold medal in the men’s 100m event with a new national junior record.

Meron finished the race in 10.41 seconds, obliterating Shehan Abepitiya’s national junior record of 10.43 seconds. It was a new tournament record as well as his personal best time. Dineth Induwara Weeraratne (10.49 sec.) was able to win the silver medal in that event by recording his best time as well.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan athletes managed to win 800 meters women’s and men’s gold medals. While Tarushi Abhishekah won the women’s gold medal with a time of 2:10:83 minutes, Savindu Avishka managed to win the men’s gold medal with a time of 1:49.83 minutes. Bronze in women’s 800m went to Sansala Himashani (2:12.13 minutes).

Netra Samadhi and Kashmika Timashi managed to win silver medals for Sri Lanka in the same event yesterday with a performance of 1.65 meters in the women’s high jump event.

Jayavi Alwis (15.69m) won the bronze medal in the men’s javelin throw event, while Shanela Seneviratne (12.04s) won the bronze medal in the women’s 100m event.

The Sri Lankan team includes 29 male and 25 female players. Today (12) is the second day of this tournament, and the tournament will end tomorrow (13).
