South Korean viral shooter Kim Yeji makes her acting debut as an assassin

Kim Yeji, the South Korean pistol shooter who captured the world’s attention during the Paris Olympics with her skill and calmness, has taken an unexpected career turn: she will star in her first acting role as an assassin.

At 32, Kim won the silver medal in the 10-metre air pistol competition in July. Her ultra-calm demeanour, combined with her trademark metal-rimmed shooting glasses and baseball cap, made her a viral internet sensation. Videos of her performances quickly spread, attracting praise from the likes of Elon Musk, who on his social networking site X (formerly Twitter) wrote: ‘She should star in an action movie. She doesn’t need to act!’.

Now, Kim will star in ‘Crush’, a short-form series spinoff of the global film project ‘Asia’, according to a spokesperson for Seoul-based entertainment firm Asia Lab. The athlete will share the screen with Indian actress and influencer Anushka Sen in what promises to be a ‘deadly duo’, a company statement said.

Since winning the silver medal, a clip of Kim at the Baku World Cup in May has gone viral, inspiring memes, fan art and edits to the K-pop beat. In August, Kim signed with a talent agency in South Korea to manage her activities outside of sports, and has been featured in a photo shoot for Louis Vuitton.

This acting debut marks a new stage in the career of Kim Yeji, who continues to break new ground both on and off the shooting range.
