Doping is on the decline in Sri Lankan sports

A report indicate that the doping in Sri Lanka on the decline level Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) revealed.

During the year 2024, SLADA conducted doping tests on 160 athletes at a cost of one crore rupees, of which only three tested positive

About 35 athletes and 20 cricketers have been tested for doping, which is the highest number of sports tested this year.

In addition to that, the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency has undertaken to conduct random urine sample testing in sports such as weightlifting, swimming and netball.

This year, cricketer Niroshan Dickwella was banned for 3 months for using cocaine, while netballer Semini Alwis was banned for 4 years for using anabolic steroids. Boxer Dilsara Hettiarachchi was charged with doping salbitol and the sentence is yet to be decided.

Such punishments are not only a ban from the competition, but also banning the athletes from engaging in any activity related to the sport, including training and associating with the athletes.

In 2023, 4 athletes were punished for using doping, and in 2022, 5 athletes were punished.Therefore, the use of doping is at a minimum this year. Director General of the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency, Dr. Shiromi Pilapitiya, said that the main reason for this is the notifications related to the use of prohibited stimulants. Ms. Pilapitiya mentioned that the use of doping in the Sri Lankan sports sector has decreased due to various workshops at the university level and school level awareness as well as the understanding provided through the sports associations.

Since this year, the importance of avoiding and harming the use of these stimulants has been included in the school curriculum, steps have also been taken to provide training to more than 500 teachers.
