Adding a new face to Sri Lankan boxing, Payal Dharmasena and Sanduni Priyadarshani of the Sri Lankan Army were crowned as the champions of the 97th National Boxing Championship held at the Galle Face Outdoor Boxing Ring for the first time in history.
The Army team won 7 gold medals in the men’s competition and 3 gold medals in the women’s competition, winning the highest honor in the tournament. The Sri Lanka Air Force took the honor in the women’s competition by claiming 5 gold medals.
Piyal Dharmasena, who competed in the 54 kg weight class of this year’s 4-day tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Boxing Institute, defeated Ravindu Jayanath Kumar of the Vidyarathne Boxing Club in the final match.
Yashini Fernando lost to Sanduni Priyadarshini who competed in the 52 kg weight class. Army H.M.L.P. Jayawardene as the best loser, Air Force K.K.I.T. Perera was also awarded as the best loser.
Nadika Pushpakumari, one of the strongest female boxers in the country, won the gold medal in the 48 kg weight class.
