Mohammed Shami becomes fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets

India’s ace pacer Mohammed Shami registered his name in the history books by becoming the fastest Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The feat was achieved during India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday. With this milestone, Shami surpassed Ajit Agarkar’s long-standing record.

Shami achieved the milestone in just his 103 ODI innings, surpassing Agarkar, who had reached the feat in 133 innings. This also makes Shami the second-fastest bowler globally to reach the 200-wicket milestone in ODIs, trailing only Australia’s Mitchell Starc, who achieved the feat in 102 innings. Furthermore, the pacer broke a significant world record, surpassing Starc in terms of the fewest balls required to claim 200 wickets.

The Bengal-born reached the milestone in just 5126 deliveries, outpacing Starc (5240 balls). With this achievement, Shami became only the eighth Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets, joining an elite list of Indian bowling greats.

Needing three wickets to reach the landmark, Shami dismissed Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz early in his spell before returning to send Jaker Ali back to the pavilion, thereby reaching the 200-wicket achievement in style. Jaker, who had been playing a good knock, fell victim to a well-executed off-cutter from Shami, attempting to clear the infield but only managing to find Virat Kohli at long-on.

He ended up scalping the wickets of Tanzim Hasan and Taskin Ahmed towards the fag end of the innings to secure a fifer (5/53) as India restricted Bangladesh to 228.
