National Weightlifting Championships from March 29

Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation (SLWF) will conduct the National Weightlifting Championships for youth, Junior and Senior categories on March 29, 30, 31 and April 1,2 at National Sports Complex, Polonnaruwa.

This National championship will not only showcase the remarkable talent of our weightlifters but also strengthen skills of weightlifters for future International meets. Recently weightlifters have shown their talent to bring glory to Sri Lanka. Chintana Geethal Vidhanage the Commonwealth Games gold medalist (62kg) in 2006 and silver medalist in 2010 hails from Polonnaruwa and there are more medal winners at Commonwealth Games produced from this sport.

Indika Dissanayake the silver medal winner of Commonwealth Games in 2018, Sudesh Peiris in 2014 brought honour to the country. Both Chintana and Sudesh have retired from this sport but Indika Dissanayake still aims to go for the Olympics and he will compete in this National Championship.

In fact Indika Dissanayake narrowly missed his Olympic chance last time with lack of International events to fulfill his ranking points and he is not given up and ready for next Olympics. Dilanka Isuru Kumara another Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in 2022, Hansani Gomes and Chaturanga Lakmal Commonwealth Games bronze medal winners in 2018 have started their journey from the National Championship.

The National Weightlifting Federation already planned this National championship for both Junior and Youth categories and that also give good exposure for young weightlifters.
