Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the opening match of the 18th season of the TATA IPL, defeating defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
New RCB skipper Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to field first. Sunil Narine and captain Ajinkya Rahane anchored Kolkata’s innings with scores of 44 and 56, respectively. However, in the last five overs RCB’s bowlers delivered impactful spells, restricting Kolkata to 174/8. Krunal Pandya took 3 wickets for RCB.
Chasing a target of 175, RCB openers Virat Kohli (59*) and Phil Salt (56) put on a brilliant batting display, taking their team close to victory. Despite losing three wickets, RCB comfortably reached the target with 22 balls to spare, securing a seven-wicket win. Skipper Rajat Patidar contributed 34 runs.
For KKR, Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Vaibhav Arora claimed one wicket each.
