Sri Lanka shocked higher-ranked Laos with a landmark 2-1 win after 22 years, in a FIFA International Friendly at the National Stadium in Vientiane, Laos on Thursday (20).
The match, played under the floodlights in front of a packed home crowd, saw Sri Lanka lead 1-0 at half-time, before securing their first triumph over their hosts in two decades.
The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Wade Dekker scored from a brilliant cross by Sam Durrant.
Durrant’s precise ball set up Dekker perfectly, and he made no mistake stroking the ball to the net, while putting the Lankans ahead.
Sri Lanka’s attacking and defensive play were solid throughout the first half. Despite having another chance to extend their lead in the 30th minute, the visitors maintained their control for the remainder of the match.
The tourists doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, when Adhavan Rajamohan scored a splendid goal.
This stunning strike underlined Sri Lanka’s dominance over the 186th-ranked Laos, despite the former being ranked 200th.
