Sri Lanka’s Nipuni Vasana excelled in the women’s 50kg repechage event at the Asian Wrestling Championships but fell short of a place in the semi-final after a hard-fought quarter-final clash, which concluded in Amman, Jordan.
Vasana’s biggest challenge came in the quarter-final, where she faced China’s Yu Sheng, a dominant force in the category. The 18-year-old Sheng, last year’s Under-20 World Champion and a two-time Asian gold medalist, proved too strong, defeating Vasana 4-0. The Sri Lankan struggled to score as Sheng displayed superior technique and strength.
Earlier, Vasana made an impressive start in the qualification round against the Philippines’ Jia Pingot. In a high-intensity bout, the match ended 5-5, but Vasana advanced on classification points (3-1), securing a semi-final spot. Despite matching her opponent in technical points, Vasana edged ahead to keep Sri Lanka’s hopes alive before bowing out against Sheng.
