Sri Lanka’s boxing chief Dian Gomes has been inducted into the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Women’s Commission and his appointment has been officially confirmed on Wednesday.
It is another feather in the hat of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) president who has been the catalyst for the resurgence of boxing in the country.
A former Junior National Flyweight boxing champion, Dian has been an ardent follower of the sport and has been actively engaged in its administration for the past 15 years. He was elected as president of the BASL for eight consecutive years.
He was instrumental in introducing corporate thinking to the sport while implementing a long-term strategic plan for the Association, which resulted in a boxer participating in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 after a lapse of 40 years.
Dian has also served in the International Boxing Associations (AIBA) Women’s Commission (2014 to date) and was the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Sport (CABOS).
