The Sri Lanka Olympians in their attempt to strive towards a greener Sri Lanka came forward voluntarily to participate at the ‘Wanaropa ‘ 2019, an Island-wide program aimed at increasing the forest cover in the country by 32 percent, was launched successfully in Kurunegala. The 14 past Olympians who brought credit to the country took part in this memorable tree planting programme which was held at the Welegedera Central College Kurunegala recently.
The President of the Olympians Sriyani Kulawansa said the main aim of organizing an event of this nature was to create awareness in the society of the importance of trees. She also pointed out the best way to send this message is to engage across to school children. That’s why we decided to select this school to conduct this programme with the school children and their staff and officials of the forest department
A total of 67 plants were planted around the school grounds with the names of 67 Olympians who have represented the nation. dfThis included their names, events and the year they participated at the Olympics.
“On the other hand, we were able to encourage the school children towards sporting activities running up to the Olympics. We have brought fame to the Nation and now it’s time to give some more for the country apart from what we do in sports.” added champion Hurdler Kulawansa who is the President of the Sri Lanka Olympians hailing from Ibbagamuwa rural town close to the Kurunegala.
She said that it was important that the students have a good awareness of the mother nature for improved performances in sports.
Among the Olympians Dhamayanthi Dharsha, Julian Boling, Pushpamali Ramanayake, Anuruddha Ratnayake, Ruwani Abeymanna, Sugath Tillekaratna also participated in this programme. After this tree planting programme, the motivation programme was conducted by Olympians to the students and it was high value for these students and they were happy to share their views with the Olympians .
