SA Vs SL Skipper Dimuth rescue Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were 150 for four at stumps on the second day of the second innings of the second Test against South Africa in Johannesburg today (January 4).

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne returned to the usual rhythm with an unbeaten 91 off 116 balls with 17 fours and remained on the wicket for the third day. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella was unbeaten on 18 as Sri Lanka remained hopeful for the match.

Kusal Janith Perera, Sri Lanka’s top scorer in the first innings, was dismissed by Lungi Engidi for not allowing him to settle on the field. Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten run was the main reason for Sri Lanka’s innings collapse. Minod Bhanuka, who was called up for the inaugural Test, also managed just one run in his second innings. Lahiru Thirimanne was run out for 31 off a ball by Lungi Engidi.

Lungi Engidi, who bowled brilliantly, took three wickets for 26 runs.

South Africa, who were 148 for one at stumps on the first day, were bowled out for 154 in their first innings today. Accordingly, Sri Lanka fast bowlers led by Vishwa Fernando restricted South Africa to 302 in the first innings.

Dean Elgar, who scored his 13th Test century, hit 127 off 163 balls with 22 fours. With him, Razi Vander Dussein, who was instrumental in building the South African innings, was bowled out for 67 by Dasun Shanaka.

Vishwa Fernando, who recorded the best bowling performance in his Test innings, took five wickets for 101 runs, while Asitha Fernando and Dasun Shanaka shared two wickets each.

Tomorrow (5th) is the third day of the match.
