Sri Lanka cricket elections -Former president set to stage a come back

Former president Shammi Silva is set to stage a comeback into Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after country’s Sports Minister, traditionally a strong authority in the game, refused to get involved in the controversy-ridden elections to the SLC. The elections are scheduled for Thursday (May 20).

“I don’t get involved in the election process. I will work with whoever gets elected,” Namal Rajapakse, the son of Prime Minister Mainda Rajapakse, told Cricbuzz ahead of the elections. “It is up to the stakeholders of the SLC to elect the right person. I have given them (SLC) a long-term blueprint for the development of the game. They can work independently.”

The assertion non-interference from the Sports Minister virtually confirms the re-election of Silva, whose opponents, led by former secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, withdrew from the elections alleging irregularities in the process. Nishantha, a brother of former World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, was contesting for the post of secretary, a position he had held in the past.
