The unknown at Sabina Park

by Brian Thomas

Sabina Park in Kingston Jamaica has named the two bowling ends as the Michael Holding end and the other as Courtny Walsh end.

Most International venues have spectator stands and Pavilions named after the greats of the game.

But Sabina Park has honored two great Jamaicans namely ” Whispering Death ” Michael Holding and Heart of Lion Courtny Walsh as stalwarts of their soil, as they were deadly with pace, bounce, swing, and accurate in their spells.

Michael Holding in 60 Test Matches scalped 249 Wickets at an economy rate 2.79 , whilst in the shorter version, he claimed 142 Wickets in 102 One day International’s at an average of 3.32. I was fortunate to watch him bowl at the Kensington Oval back in 1976 against England when he took his career-best of 14 for 149 runs and kept the Englishman jumping and prodding with his exquisite skills.

Courtney played more cricket than Michael because during his time more teams qualified to play Test and one day International’s. The tall Heart of Lion in 132 Tests took 519 wickets at an economy rate of 2.53, whilst in the one-day arena in 205 Matches he scalped 227 victims with an economy rate of 3.83
