Day 2 – Dilanka Wins Bronze, Gymnasts into Finals

Dilanks Isuru Kumara was the star of Day 2 yesterday as he won Sri Lanka’s first medal in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as he lifted a combined weight of 225kg to clinch the Bronze medal.

Fellow weightlifters tried but didn’t come close to a podium finish. Thilanga Palangasinghe (61kg) couldn’t finish as he unfortunately sustained an injury. Srimali Samarakoon(49kg) came close to her personal best but managed only 152kg in combined lifts. Chamari Warnakusalooriya (55kg) managed only 184kg.

The Sri Lanka Mixed Team in Badminton advanced to the quarter finals as they finish in 2nd place in Group A. They lost to India 5-0 earlier in the day but beat Pakistan 4-1 to seal a place in the knockout rounds.

Two Gymnasts Ruchira Fernando and Milka Gehani made it into the All Round Finals of Gymnastics. In Squash, all four players lost their matches 3-0 in the round of 32.

Swimmer Ganga Seneviratne made an impressive effort in the Women’s 100m Backstroke as she clocked her personal best timing of 1 minute 6.17 seconds and was close for a semi final spot as she came overall 20th place.

Rugby 7’s saw two successive defeats to Samoa and Uganda. Sri Lanka managed 3 tries against Uganda while the Samoa game ended scoreless. Cricket did not end in favour of the team as England came on top by 5 wickets.
