In the 6th and final appearance of Chinthana Vidanage, the first Sri Lankan to win a Gold medal in weightlifting back in 2006 and now aged 40, finished in 9th place yesterday in the Men’s 81kg Weight Lifting.
He recorded a 127kg lift in the Snatch and a 155kg in the Clean and Jerk. The Commonwealth Legend lifted a total weight of 282kg.
On a positive note, Ganga Seneviratne achieved her personal best timing of 2 minutes 26.63 seconds in the Women’s 200m Heats. Although she did not qualify for the straight finals, she came in 10th place overall and was listed as a reserve finalist, a noteworthy achievement for the 19 year old.
Other sports did not see positive results. Boxing saw both Jeewantha Kumara (Featherweight) and Ishan Bandara (Flyweight) lose their bouts in the round of 16. Ishan was a Bronze medalist in 2018.
In Judo, Vimukthi Priyankara (Men’s 60kg) and Chamila Marapullige (Women’s 48kg) also lost their rounds. Chanithma Sinaly lost her match to Naomi Phatsima of Bostwana 3-0 in Squash.
