Sarangi Silva and Sumedha Ranasinghe will compete tonight in their respective finals at the Commonwealth Games. This will be the last day the Sri Lankans will take part in any event.
Sarangi is the National Long Jump record holder of 6.65m and qualified for the finals with a best jump of 6.42m. This will be held from 11.35PM onwards.
Sumedha Ranasinghe the National Javelin record holder with a best of 83.04m will compete at 12.10AM midnight. Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra will not take part owing to an injury.
The Sri Lanka record holders are going up against very stiff competition and hence, winning a Bronze has a very low probability. However, if they beat their personal best, they can be proud of renewing the National record on the international stage.
The day before saw a rather disappointing turn of events for the Sri Lankan athletes who came rather short of their personal best timings. Kalinga Kumarage in an interview stated that the temperature at night was close to 12 degrees Celcius and the cold conditions were rather harsh. Nilani Rathnayake ran with gloves.
Hopefully, the cold conditions don’t come in the way very negatively against the Sri Lankans but at the same time, will be a disadvantage to other athletes who are unfamiliar with these conditions. A close fight for a podium finish is expected.
