Dasun Shanaka will continue to lead the T-20I team. The 30-year-old all rounder has been retained to lead the team for the upcoming Asia Cup, it is learnt.
According to the sources in the SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) board, the selection committee, in consultation with the head coach (Chris Silverwood), has picked a 20-member squad, including three standbys for the Asia Cup.
“At present we are not sure whether the standbys would also travel to the UAE. It will depend on the Covid situations in the UAE and Sri Lanka. At both these places, the pandemic has not gone fully”, the top source in the SLC said.
The SLC is also awaiting the sports ministry approval before announcing the squad. It is also learnt that there has been no newcomer in the chosen squad.
The players are scheduled to begin their training from Friday at the R. Premadasa Stadium under the watchful eyes of coaching staff, barring head coach and the physio.
The head coach (Chris Silverwood) and the physio (Brett Harrop) are arriving on 21st August. The assistant and batting coach Naveed Nawaz has already returned from Australia, it is understood.
“The selector on tour will be Hemantha Wickramaratne”, the source said, adding, “our chief selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe is unwell (cough and fever) and being hospitalized (Lanka Hospital), but will recover soon”.
