Russell Domingo, the Head Coach of the Bangladesh team will not travel to the UAE for the Asia Cup, it is confirmed. He has been informed of the decision a day before the team departure.
According to the highly placard sources in the BCB, Domingo’s duty will be discharged by India’s newly appointed Technical Consultant Sridharan Sreeram.
“Domingo is still our head coach but he will not travel with the squad for the Asia Cup. He has been given a break. We have asked to perform his duty to our new Technical Consultant”, the top source in the BCB revealed.
The participation of Nurul Hasan in the upcoming Asia Cup is also ruled out. The 28-year-old Bangladesh wicketkeeper had been named in the squad subject to his fitness. “His finger injury scan reports are not encouraging and hence he has been omitted from the squad”, the source further added.
Earlier this month, he was ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour with a finger injury. The wicketkeeper-batsman hurt his left index finger while keeping against fast bowler Hasan Mahmud during the second T20 international at the Harare Sports Club, and underwent surgery in Singapore by an orthopaedic surgeon Anthony Foo.
“During the operation, three pins were inserted in Nurul Hasan’s finger. One of the pins was removed after one week in Dhaka. He underwent a scan on Monday and reports are being sent to the doctor in Singapore (the doctor is overseas now).
“Pace bowler Hasan Mahmud and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan, who were originally selected in the squad, will both miss the Asia Cup through injury. Mahmud suffered a ligament damage to his right ankle during training on 20 August and was sidelined for at least three weeks. Sohan underwent a surgery on his left index finger in Singapore two weeks ago and needs more time to recover”, the source added.
Habibul Bashar, one of the selectors will travel with the team, it is learnt.
Bangladesh’s first match in the competition will be played against Afghanistan on August 30.
The team is set to leave for the UAE on Tuesday.
