Morocco beat Portugal 1-0, first African team to reach WC semifinal

Youssef En-Nesyri’s towering header late in the first half gave first-time quarter-finalists Morocco a 1-0 win over Portugal in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinal.

En-Nesyri, who had twice headed over the crossbar earlier, leapt higher than both Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa and defender Ruben Dias to put Morocco ahead in the 42nd minute. Portugal started the game with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench and Goncalo Ramos in the XI, following his hat trick against Switzerland in the Round of 16

Morocco became the first African team ever to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup .  Morocco have surpassed the three other African sides to reach the quarter-finals — Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.
