Dame Noeline Taurua has revealed what it will take for ANZ Premiership players to make the Silver Ferns’ Netball World Cup squad for the July tournament.
Just one week into the Premiership, competition between players is already heating up as the Mystics produced a blow-out 64-38 win over the Steel while the Pulse and Tactix claimed narrow victories over the Magic and Stars.
With a huge year ahead and their 2019 title to defend, national coach Taurua says the Ferns will select their 12-player squad differently this year to give everyone ample opportunity to prove themselves in the domestic competition.
“The thing probably which is a wee bit different this year is that we’re not trialling and we got a bit of an inkling around that last year,” Taurua told SENZ Afternoons.
“Because of the time when ANZ sits and because of the deadline date it means that we just don’t have the space and time to go into trials.
“So we pick two days straight after the Grand Finals, so that’s a different position.”
With finals set to begin on June 4 and the squad naming following shortly after, Taurua says a mixture of previous international and ANZ form will provide the basis for their World Cup selections.
The Silver Ferns’ first match-up of the World Cup will see them take on Trinidad and Tobago in Cape Town on July 28.
