Nadeesha Ramanayaka of Southern Province and K.M.D Dharshana of Central Province were adjudged the Best Women’s and Men’s Athletes at the 47th National Sports Games (NSG) which ended at Sugathadasa Stadium on Saturday.
The three-day event was conducted by the Sports Ministry and Sports Development Department with the Justice Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe as the chief guest while a notable absentee was Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on the final day. State Sports Minister Rohana Dissanayake, and MP Premanath Dolawatte, Sports Ministry Secretary K. Mahesan were present on this occasion while Sports Director General Dr. Shemal Fernando took a lot of pain to make the three-day meet a success.
Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said the performances of the National Sports Games were excellent. The records established by local athletes are a good sign. Sports helps to build a healthy society today. The Sports Minister and his Ministry are doing excellent work to promote sports said Minister Rajapakshe. I think players must learn discipline from sports he said.
State Minister Rohana Dissanayake said athletes from Rural areas did well to win medals by making use of the facilities provided by the Sports Ministry which always works for the benefit of sportsmen and sportswomen he said.
The Asian Championship gold medalist Nadeesha Ramanayake who won both 200m and 400m gold medals said winning the best women’s athlete award gave a big boost to her for the Asian Games in China. I am more focused on the Asian Games medal and this meet performance gave me confidence.
