Asian Games 2023: Advisory issued for Indian team; asked to avoid political statements, embrace culture

Indian athletes slated to take part in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, have received a set of guidelines about their behaviour and that they should, at all times, be cognisant of the host country’s cultural norms and traditions.

A 651-member Indian contingent will take part in the Games, scheduled to take place from 23 September to 8 October. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has now released a comprehensive 39-page playbook, known as ‘Informational Module’, to outline what is expected from the athletes.

According to a report by The Times of India, the aforementioned playbook is segregated into three separate sections: ‘Getting ready for Hangzhou’, ‘Just don’t Dope’ and ‘Press & Media’. These sections cover different aspects that include travel preparations, venue information, weather, transportation, services that will be available at the Games Village, all the different available communication challenges (WhatsApp, Uber, Google, and Google Maps may not function). This playbook also covers Mandarin language usage with pronunciation guidelines, doping awareness as well as a no-syringe policy. Also, the contingent has been given a knowhow into different media-related services and emergencies.
