Tharusha Triumphs in Queensland Waters

Tharusha Perera, a 16 year old Sri Lankan- Australian Open Water Swimmer was placed 3rd place in the 2023 Queensland Open Water Championships held last week on the 14th of October.

Unlike Swimming which is confined to a 25 or 50m pool, Open Water is held in outdoor water bodies such as oceans, rivers and lakes, hence posing other challenges such as cold water or currents. Tharusha representing under the Sri Lankan Federation but coached at Cheltenham ASC by Kelly Stubbins, finished as the third fastest swimmer in the 16 year 7.5km category, with a timing of 1 hour 40 minutes and 20.75 seconds.

Earlier this year, Tharusha took part in the Australian Open Water Championship in January, finishing overall 17th place in the 16 Years 5km with a timing of 1 hour 7 minutes and 22.87 seconds. He has been selected to compete again next year as well which in both the 5km and 7.5km events.

Tharusha was also able to win medals in the Sri Lanka Age Nationals for 800m and 1500m events. As closing remarks, Tharusha hopes to represent Sri Lanka in the Open Water discipline internationally.
