The newly-established SLC Interim Committee, as per Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, is poised to thoroughly investigate the corruption and fraudulent practices that have persisted in recent years.
Consisting of two Retired Supreme Court Judges and one Retired High Court Judge, the committee’s principal mandate is to scrutinize previous allegations and irregularities within Sri Lanka Cricket, declared the Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, in his address yesterday.
Citing the authority vested in the Sports Minister by the 1973 No. 25 Sports Act, the existing Sri Lanka Cricket Board has been suspended, and an Interim Committee has been established. A special Gazette Notification issued by the Minister outlines this change.
The decision to suspend the existing board comes in the wake of the 2020 Twenty20 World Cup special audit report, which highlighted alleged instances of corruption, malpractices, mismanagement, and negligence by the board. The Minister emphasized the need for a transparent and thorough investigation.
“Furthermore, the Chairman of the committee will appoint sub-committees to address various areas such as administration, cricket development, and law,” the Minister added.
Speaking to journalists, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe expressed his confidence in the choice.
“Initially, we have to face the challenge of cricket to win it. I think the suitable person has been given the suitable position. I think the general public of this country would agree to it,” remarked the minister.
The newly appointed Interim Committee includes Upali Dharmadasa, a former SLC President and brother of Jayantha Dharmadasa, the vice president of the previous Board.
“In one family, you will have different characters. Upali Dharmadasa is a person who has contributed significantly to the sport. Experienced individuals are necessary. He has toured, investing his personal resources for the country’s sport. That kind of commitment is needed,” expressed the Minister, highlighting Upali Dharmadasa’s positive contributions to the sport.
