Thilina Rajakaruna of St Sebastian’s College Moratuwa and Varangana Jayawardena of Lumbini College Colombo emerged under 19 boys and girls champions at the 51st Junior National Badminton Championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association and concluded at S.Thomas Gymnasium Mt Lavinia yesterday.
The six-day tournament successfully conducted by Schools Badminton Association and it’s Secretary Malika Waduge said for the first time attractive cash awards were presented by the Schools Badminton Association. Thilina Rajakaruna and Varangana Jayawardena received Rs. 100,000 cash award each while under 19 boys and girls runners up Aashinsa Herath of Royal College and Praveena Wijesundara of Sir John Kotelawala MV Kurunegala received Rs. 75,000 cash award each.
In addition under 19 semi finalists received Rs. 15,000 each and boys and girls under 17 champions Keneth Aruggoda of Lyceum International Wattala and Ranithma Liyanage of Christ Church Baddegama received Rs. 50,000 cash awards. Under 15 boys and girls runners up Chenal Dewshan of Prince of Wales Moratuwa and Lukshana Sanjeewakumar of Lyceum International Wattala received Rs.50,000 cash awards and semi finalists of under 17 received Rs. 10,000 cash awards.
In the under 19 boys final Thilina Rajakaruna beat Aashinsa Herath after three hard fought games 18/21 ,21/19 and 21/18. At the girls under 19 final Varangana defeated Praveena in two straight sets 21/11, 21/11. The under 17 boys doubles final was won by Sanuda Ariyasinghe and Ranthuka Rupasinghe of Lyceum International Wattala defeating Thidas Weragoda of St Joseph’s and Pamith Attanayake of Lyceum International Wattala 21/9, 21/16. Sandathi Dewmini of Sujatha Vidyalaya Matara and Dilni Ambalangodage of Anula Vidyalaya Nugegoda won the girls under 17 doubles defeating Pawani Illeperuma and Sanuti Gurusighe of Sangamitta BMV Galle.
Girls under 19 doubles final was won by Rashmi Mudalige and Natasha Gunasekara of Gateway International Colombo defeating Varangana Jayawardena of Lumbini and Isuru Amanda Alwis of Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo 21/14,21/14. Aashinsa Herath of Royal and Vidush Sumanadasa of S.Thomas Mt Lavinia won boys under 19 doubles defeating Manthuka Rupathunga of Lyceum International Wattala and Sajid Majeed of S.Thomas Mt Lavinia 21/17,21/18.
Varangana Jayawardena together with Aashinsa Herath defeated Ranithma Liyanage and Thidas Weragoda to emerge under 19 mixed doubles champions in a three setter 21/16,19/21,21/19.
Meanwhile Mathnara Sanumi of Musaeus defeated Dinaya Herath of St Paul’s Milagiriya to win the girls under 11 title while Hansaka Rashminda of St Joseph’s Colombo won the boys under 11 title defeating Navithu Kumarapperuma of St Joseph’s. Nithini Sasandhi of Sujatha Vidyalaya Matara beat Gajali Padma Bandara of St Anthony’s Katugastota to win the girls under 13 title. Thamindu Fernando of St Joseph’s won boys under 13 title. Sithuli Ranasinghe of Nugegoda Anula Vidyalaya excelled at the girls under 15 final defeating Vishwani Wanniarachchi of Gateway International Colombo. Keneth Aruggoda won the boys under 15 title defeating Chenal Dewshan of Prince of Wales in the final.
Hiruni Dias of Lyceum International Panadura and Chenal Dewshan of Prince of Wales were adjudged best up and coming players.
St Joseph’s College Colombo and Sujatha Vidyalaya Matara won overall boys and girls championship while Lyceum International Wattala and Musaeus won boys and girls overall second place. St Sebastian’s College Moratuwa and Anula Vidyalaya Nugegoda won overall boys and girls third place. Prabath Indika Assistant Director Physical Education of Education Ministry was the chief guest while Malika Waduge the Secretary and Sumith Chandrasiri de Silva the Tournament Secretary of Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association were present at the awards ceremony.
