National Athletic championship to give a big boost for Asian Games

Over 750 athletes are expected to take part in the 96th National Athletic championships which is scheduled to be held from 3rd to 5th of August.

Sri Lanka Telecom once again has come forward to sponsor this championship. “Sri Lanka Telecom’s decision to continue to sponsor the championship gives us a is big strength and also for all the athletes” said AAA President Major General Palitha Fernando.

This national championships is going to be selection trial before the Asian Games. All leading athletes except 800m Indunil Heath and US based  Hiruni Wijayaratne are expected to take part this championship. Both Hiruni 10.000m and Indunil Herath who is in Kenya for further training hope to come back Indonesia for the Asia Games.

“We have good second string teams that is a good sign for future. During the Asian junior championships we got nine medals while showed fine performances during the Finland world championship. I think youngsters already been an encouragement to seniors” said AAA chief Major General Palitha Fernando.

“We have a busy schedule next year starting with South Asian Games in March, Asian senior Athletic championship and world athletic championship follwing next. In addtion we are ready to send  4 athletes for youth Olympic games in Argentina in next October” explained General Fernando.

Sri Lanka is expecting to win medals in events like 400m and 100m relays, 800m men’s and women’s 10.000m at the Asian Games
