Nine new records established in Age Group swimming

Nine new meet records were established on the third day of the 44th edition of the National Age Group Swimming Championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Swimming Complex yesterday.

In the U-17 boys 100M backstroke Shevinda de Silva from St Joseph’s College set the new record clocking 1:02.05 and broke the record set by Imesha Chathuranga (1:02:86) in 2014.

Lasith Saranga from St Sebestian’s College Moratuwa was placed second with 1:07.99 and Chamindu Lakshan from Dharmasoka College won the third place clocking 1:08.90.

In the U-17 girls 200M freestyle Thimali Bandara from Killer Whale AC produced a best performance and set a record by clocking 2:17. 12 as she erased the record set by Uththama Silva (2:19.87) in 2015.

Ganga Seneviratne took second place with 2:21.35 while fellow school mate Seneshi Herath bagged third place with 2:23.29.

Thimali also set a new record in the 400M as well clocking 5:36.35 beating the record set by KMN Karunanayake (5:38.51) in 2016 while in the boys event Amjad Hasan established a record by clocking 5:07.67 as he erased the record set by Gavin Karunanayake (5:13.05) in 2016.

Pulvini Vihara Jayathilaka set the record in the U-20 400M marking 5:46..45 as she overcome the one set by Shaleena Peiris (5:49.05) in 2015.

In the U-11 boys 50M butterfly Pinsara Sandaham established a record in 35.00 seconds and erased the record set by ADA Prabashwara (36.48) last year while in the U-15 girls 50M butterfly Aniqah Gaffoor set the record when she clocked 30.67 to knock off the one set by Hiru Perera (31.56) in 2014.

In the U-17 50M boys butterfly, Sandev Senarathne (26.74) established a new record erasing Akalanka Peiris’ 27.04 set in 2016 while in the U-20 girls event Dilrukshi Perera (30.45) set a new record in the 50M as she erased the one set by Ridmi Rankotge (31.35) in 2014. South Asian gold medalist Ganga Seneviratne from Visakha Vidyalaya and Amrith Perera from Gateway College Colombo won the gold medal in the Under-17 age category.

Seneviratne who competed in the U-17 100M backstroke clocked 1:12.6 but she failed to break Kimiko Raheem’s record of 1:05.42 in 2014.

Dinasha Hewagama from Ladies College took second place with 1:14.67 while AN Ruwanpathirana from Holy Family Convent won the third place with 1:16.18. Amrith Perera won the U-17 boys 200M freestyle event with a timing of 2:05.72 seconds and Thuvindu Fernando from Ananda College won the second place with 2:10.40 while Lahindu Weerasinghe from Royal College secured third place clocking 02:10,58 seconds.

Visakha Vidyalaya and 15-time All Island Swimming Champions from Maradana, St. Joseph’s College taking home the 2017 championship.
