www.srilankasports.com is proud to announce to have pioneered Sri Lanka’s first sports website in Sri Lanka, as they released the latest happenings in sports to the cyber space inaugurating a digital era for country’s sports reporting exactly 25 years ago.
On the 15th of January 2000, a domain name www.srilankasports.com was registered by its founder and operated it’s web presence with various news related to sports in Sri Lanka.
The scope of the venture was to unite the sporting fraternity in Sri Lanka in an online platform, thus digitally transmitting the important news for a global following reaching out to those who were interested to learn the developments and achievements of their beloved sporting heroes.
Initially functioned as a hobby, the operations of www.srilankasports.com was later welcomed by the then sports minister and the officers, as the team officially launched a sports promotion company with various innovative concepts and activities for the development of sports in Sri Lanka.
From player management to event organizing, the team at www.srilankasports.com also introduced many novel concepts in online sports reporting with football and rugby tournaments going live back in the year 2004 through Dialog Mobile Network together with daily subscriptions of voice updates.
Eventually, the team in their endeavors to promote and develop sports in Sri Lanka diversified their activities into organizing various sports events of which some became annual fixtures in the pre-Covid era.
Inter-Company Netball Championship introduced a seven-a-side format playing for Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield in a 7-1-7 minute match duration since its inaugural championship in 2006 which has gained the reputation of much looked netball tournament in the country.
Sri Lanka’s Under-19 inter school Futsal event, the SriLankaSports.com Futsal Challenge, Sri Lanka’s first day-night inter-club beach football tournament, first-ever Under-15 Inter-School Handball Championship are some under their belt.
Another notable contribution is towards Para Sports, such as establishing ‘Sri Lanka Sports Academy for Special Needs’, a first of its kind, media coverage for the Paralympics in collaboration with the National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka and the inaugural Bocce Championship for the children with special needs to be held soon.
