The hill capital giants Kandy Sports Club thumped Navy Sports Club in a ruthless performance at Nittawela on yesterday (19) to secure a commanding 66-05 win in front of their home crowd during the final game of week-7 of the Inter-Club Rugby League played in wet underfoot conditions.
On a historic note, Charani Theekshana Liyanage created history on yesterday (19) becoming the first female referee to officiate an A-Division Club Rugby game in Sri Lanka’s 146-year rugby history. Last year she also became the first female referee to officiate a top A-Division Inter-School game at Air Force Grounds Ratmalana (Thurstan vs. Wesley).
The hosts started off with a bang through a Tharindu Kudalige try in just under 3 minutes. Later, the defending runners-up went on to pile 5 more tries before the half time breather to give them a splendid 38-00 lead. This eventually sealed them the 4-try bonus point as well. Kandy rested the two Ratwatte cousins, Nigel and Tarinda and gave much needed exposure to their young guns.

Kandy started off the second essay with high morale and went on to score 4 more tries and converting them all made it a staggering 66-00 at the 57th minute mark. From there onwards it was Navy all the way as the winners could not cross the whitewash till the final whistle.
Navy skipper Stephan Gregory finally put his team on the scoreboard through their solitary try scored right throughout the game in the 61st minute.
Meanwhile ex-Isipathana youngster Kenula Hettiarachchi, playing in his debut game for Kandy, put on a stellar performance as he stood out from the Kandy forwards with his dominance in scrums and in open play whilst his lineout throws also were on point a majority of the time.
