Sri Lanka Athletes Nimesha Nidarshani (14th – 2:55.03), K. Shanmugeswaran (17th – 2: 25.48), and T. Ratnapala (19th – 2:27.07), finished within the top 20 at the 19th Asian Marathon Championship held in Jiashing, China last Sunday.
Four Sri Lankan athletes took part at this Asian Marathon but unfortunately, the other female athlete, Wathsala Herath was unable to complete the race. Finished among first 20 places at this Asian Marathon is good achievement. Sri Lankan athletes couldn’t get more chances for international marathons and this event gave good exposure for Sri Lanka marathoners.
So far in this Asian Marathon history Sri Lanka won only one medal that was bronze medal from Sarath Prasanna Gamage in 7th Asian Marathon Championship held in Japan 2000. Sarath finished that marathon with a timing of 2.28.25.
