Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed strong views on the future of cricketing relations between India and Pakistan. Speaking exclusively, Azharuddin firmly stated, “India should not only continue its stance of avoiding bilateral series with Pakistan but also withdraw from playing against Pakistan in all ICC and ACC tournaments”. His remarks come in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of innocent Indians and left the nation grieving.

Azharuddin described the Pahalgam attacks as a “very, very sad” incident, emphasizing the loss of innocent lives and the emotional toll it has taken on the country. He believes that such acts of terrorism demand a strong response, including reevaluating India’s participation in cricket matches against Pakistan. “Cricket is a sport that unites, but it cannot be played in the shadow of such tragedies,” he remarked.

While the IPL is currently underway, Azharuddin acknowledged that discontinuing the tournament at this stage would not be practical. However, he commended the Indian cricket board for taking steps to honor the victims of the Pahalgam attacks. Players wearing black armbands as a mark of mourning is a gesture he described as “a good part” of showing solidarity with the affected families.

Azharuddin was present during his appearance as the chief guest at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he inaugurated the new Orthopaedics, Spine, and Joint Care unit. The event highlighted advancements in medical care.

The former captain’s stance adds to the ongoing debate about the intersection of sports and geopolitics. His call for India to cease cricketing ties with Pakistan reflects a sentiment shared by many who believe that sports should not overshadow national interests and the safety of citizens. As the cricketing world watches, Azharuddin’s words may spark further discussions on the role of sports diplomacy in addressing larger issues.
