Fourteen new meets records were established in two days in the 34th All Island schools athletic meet which is now in progress at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. The meet will continue until October 5.
According to the Consultant to Education Ministry Sports Sunil Jayaweera, during the next three days they hope to see many more meet records being established this year as the level of the competition has improved over the years among school children for sports. “We have noticed the good level of enthusiasm and sportsmanship from school children which is a good sign for the future of Sri Lanka sports” added Jayaweera who explained that if there weren’t rain interruptions in the afternoon session, there could have been more records.
Seven running events most of them are from sprint events were set up as meet records while seven field events including jumping events saw new records. Ayesh Mihiranga of Hennatota Widyabiwardana MV set up under 14 100m new record with 11.26 seconds while Rasni Ahamad of UL Irshan MMV Polgahawela set up under 16 100m with.11.16 seconds.
Meanwhile Rumesh Tharanga from St Peters College Bambalapitiya continued to impress in Under 16 discuss throw with a new record of 55.58m while Mahawa Wijayaba National school’s H.M.I.L Bandara set up boys under 18 Shot Put record with 15.67 m.
Day two’s last record came from P.M.D.Wijeratna of Anuruddha Kumara National School Nawalapitiya in the Under 18 1500m final.
In the girls section Dinara Bandara Daala of Alethea International school Dehiwela set up under 16 100m record with 12.65 seconds while K.S.Edirisinghe of Presidents College Nawala set up under 16 200m event with 25.65 seconds. Heshani Maheshika of St Sebastian Kandana established Under 16, discus throw with 38.98 m.
The other record came in 100m from Shashini Bhagy Dewmini with a timing of 13.88 seconds.
Meanwhile Shihara Sandamini of Good Sherperd Convent Panadura set up under 12 long jump with a long jump with a T 4.89m while Melani Romeka of Ave Maria Convent with 5.07 distance created a new record and Chelsi Melani Bandara under 16 with 12.65 m.
