With less than 10 months to go, hosts of next year’s World Cup, and world number two, England Roses take on seventh in the world, Uganda She Cranes at Liverpool’s ACC.
The three-part international series beginning in Liverpool, before moving to London, offers spectators a unique opportunity to see how teams are preparing for next year’s pinnacle event. It will also be the first time Commonwealth gold medalists, England Roses, have played on home soil since their historic win at the Games earlier this year.
For players, the Uganda Series will be an opportunity to size each other up before they meet in group D at next year’s World Cup.
Uganda have risen through the world rankings at a blistering pace over the past four years, climbing from 15th in the world in 2014, to seventh in the world in 2018. In August the She Cranes qualified for the Netball World Cup by winning every one of their Regional Qualifier – Africa matches and, in turn, won the African Netball Championship (the qualifier doubled up as the African Netball Championship).
Captaining the Uganda She Cranes is Netball World Cup 2019 ambassador Peace Proscovia. Former Loughborough Lightning player and Vitality Netball Super league player of the year in 2018, Proscovia is a dominant figure in the netball arena, and her experience in the sport could prove a challenge for the Roses.
England narrowly beat the She Cranes (55-49) on their journey to Commonwealth gold in April this year. The African champions, who made their debut appearance at the Commonwealth Games, finished in an impressive sixth place.
Competition between the two teams is likely to be fierce. England return to the court fresh from playing against four of the world’s best teams in the Quad Series – where they finished second behind Australia – and both teams will be looking to step up their performance as next year’s World Cup creeps closer.
The series begins in Liverpool on the 27 November before moving to London’s Copper Box Arena for the final two fixtures on the 30 November and 2 December.
