Charith Kapukotuwa from North Western Province set up a new meet record in hammer throw event at the 44th National Sport Festival at Polonnaruwa sport complex. Kapukotuwa with a distance of 50.86 erased the record of 49.69 m in 2014. He is the present Sri Lanka record holder with a 52.53m. Sisira Kumara of Southern Province with 46.97m and G.S.R.Kumara of North Central won second and third places respectively.
Sri Lankan high jump champion could not impress in the event but he won the gold with 2.21m while Janaka Prasad Wimalasiriof Central won the long jump with 7.81m.
Sri Lankan 10,000m champion Lionel Samarajeewa failed to win the gold medal when he lost to Kumar Shanmugeswaran, who won the event with 30.49.99 seconds. Samarajeewa clocked a 30.57.95 minutes. This is the first time Samarajeewa finished second, a record he held for the last 11 years.
Tarika Kumudumali of Western with 14.59m finished first at Pole Vault event while Rumeshi Ratnayake of Sabaragamuwa with 24.3 seconds and Vinod Suranjaya of Southern with 21.3seconds won the 200m respectively.
However most of the events were spoiled by the heavy rain on Saturday ( 13).
On Sunday, President Maithreepala Sirisena is expected to be the Chief Guest while sport Minister Faizer Mustafa will be the guest of honour at the meet which organized by the sport Ministry and the sport Development Department.
