Dinuka and Thilini are 2018 national badminton champs

Dinuka Karunaratna and Thilini Hendahewa won the men’s and women’s open singles championships at the 66th National Badminton championship which concluded at Royal College sports complex at Reid avenue on Saturday.

Dinuka defeated promising shuttler Ranthushka Sasidu with two straight sets 21/11, 21/15 to win the final. Dinuka, the number one rank player showed a lot of confidence after making a hard-fought three setter game against Buwanaka Gunatilleka at the semi-final. This is the third time Dinuka won this major title previously claiming it in 2010 and 2016.

Meanwhile Defending champion Thilini Hendahewa once again dominated the women’s singles defeating Kavidi Sirimannage with a three setter game 20/22, 21/9 and 21/17. This is the sixth year Thilini bagged this major title.

Thilini and Kavidi won the women’s double title while  Kavidi and Buwaneka created major upset at the mixed double final defeating Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa who were the defending champion pair of this event.
Sachin  and Buwaneka once again proved their ability to take men’s double title.

Louie Karunaratna the father of Dinuka also won the men’s over 55 double title with Rohan Fernando. Former National champion Niroshan Wijekoon proved his class to take a double by winning men’s over 50 single and double event partnering with Ranil Pathirana.

Sports Minister Faizer Mustafa was the chief guest while Sri Lanka Badminton President Nishantha Jayasinghe, representative from Sponsors Pyramid Wilmer Pvt Ltd and Yonex Sunrise were present at this finals.
